Grotesque – to damage and reconstruct

Name of Artist Educator: Leung Yiu Hong
Level:
Excercise Category: Class Prelude, Imagery Reading, Visual storytelling

When images are combined into one single scene, each fragment can be seen as different individual ones while they could be connecting with the others also.

Concept / Inspiration:

When images are combined into one single scene, each fragment can be seen as different individual ones while they could be connecting with the others also.

Sometimes, if we focus on a certain part of an event or object, the meaning may become more abstract. Once the specific part is combined with the others, other meanings emerge. To damage and reconstruct, to repeat or overlap, these could create different atmospheres to the images, like we are using different angles and point of view to observe the same person or events. When we combine these images into one single scene, each fragment can be seen as different individual ones while they could be connecting with the others also.

Goals:

  1. To let students explore different perspectives and points of view during the process of image combination.

Materials / Equipment:

  • Camera

Location:

Within campus

Workshop Description:

Duration: 20 minutes

  1. The instructor would be the model. All the students take different parts of the model with their smartphones, i.e. chin, left and right eyes, shoulders, mouth, fingers or eyebrows, etc. Students should communicate well between themselves in order to avoid overlapping or missing out some parts of the model’s upper body.
  2. Students are asked to combine the pictures in whatever ways they want.

Actual Outcome:

Since students needed to combine the photos afterwards, they were reminded to take a close up for the part they were responsible for so as to allow standard composition and easier combination.
